Shipping to Ecuador

Ecuador's two arrival ports do different jobs. Manta, on the Pacific coast of Manabí province, is the country's main port for imported vehicles and takes about 95% of the new cars and RoRo cargo discharged in Ecuador. It is run by Terminal Portuario de Manta, which operates through the Chilean logistics group Agunsa and landed more than 67,000 imported vehicles there in 2025. Containers go further south to Guayaquil, where the Contecon Guayaquil terminal, part of the ICTSI group, has storage areas for imported vehicles waiting to be cleared. On the current schedule most RoRo sailings take 2-4 weeks and container sailings 5-6 weeks, because the containers change ship on the way.

A left-hand-drive market

Ecuador registers left-hand-drive vehicles only, which means a UK car cannot legally be put on the road there. Right-hand drive is barred from registration and there is a standing prohibition on importing used cars, so the answer does not change with condition or paperwork. Our buying team works across the UK and Europe, so send us the specification you have in mind and we will see what left-hand-drive options we can put in front of you.

The steering rule sits on top of a wider ban. Ecuador's foreign trade committee, COMEX, lists used vehicles among prohibited imports, so a used car cannot be shipped in for sale or for an ordinary buyer. The main exception for individuals is for Ecuadorians coming home. Under the Organic Law on Human Mobility and its regulation, a returning migrant over 18 who holds a Certificado de Migrante Retornado may bring one car as part of their household goods (menaje de casa); someone who was abroad only to study cannot. The car's model year must fall within the five years before import and its value within a cap of 80 basic unified salaries. It must have been owned in the migrant's or a family member's name before they arrived to settle, and shipped together with the rest of the household goods. A car bought as salvage is refused even if it has been repaired, and the benefit can be claimed only within 60 months of arrival and once in ten years.

Customs clearance is the work of the Servicio Nacional de Aduana del Ecuador (SENAE). The registration, or matrícula, is then issued by the Agencia Nacional de Tránsito or the municipal transit authority once the fees and taxes are paid, and proof of the compulsory SPPAT traffic-accident cover is needed before the car can be registered.

In the UK we source the car, arrange tax-free supply from the selling dealer where it qualifies, collect it, clear it through UK export customs and see it loaded for Manta and Guayaquil. Sailings leave from Liverpool, Felixstowe, London Gateway and Southampton. We can arrange customs clearance, registration and delivery to your door through a local agent, quoted separately, or work with an agent of your choice.

Documentation Required for Booking

  • Car Registration Document (V5 or Logbook) and Vehicle Invoice (or value).
  • ID (one government-issued photo ID and one utility bill showing address).

Payment Terms / Modes

  • A £1,000 deposit secures a vehicle we source or buy for you. It is part of the price, not an extra fee. If you cancel, our terms and conditions say what is refunded.
  • The balance is due in full, in cleared funds, before the vehicle is loaded, unless your quotation sets out different terms.
  • Bank transfer preferred. Card payments up to £5,000, with no fee on personal debit or credit cards.
  • Letters of credit, cheques, money orders and cash are not accepted.

Our Other Services

UK Car Sourcing & Supply

We source any new or used vehicle from any manufacturer in the UK, through our network of franchised dealers, car auctions, classified listings and private sellers, then inspect, purchase and export it to your country.

Buy a Car in the UK on Your Behalf

We check, view and buy the UK car you've found, from a dealer or a private seller, then ship it to you, protecting you from the pitfalls of paying an unknown seller from overseas.

Tax-Free & VAT-Free Vehicle Supply

We find new and VAT-qualifying used cars from VAT-registered dealers who will sell them free of UK VAT for export, which takes a sixth off a VAT-inclusive price. The saving comes from the dealer, not as a refund from us: we are not VAT registered. We arrange the export and give the dealer the proof it needs.

New / Used Car Export

We export new and used cars from the UK every week, sourced from our dealer, auction and trade network or supplied by you, given a multi-point inspection before shipment and shipped worldwide by RoRo or container.

Pre-Purchase Inspections

Before you commit to a car, we check its DVLA, MOT and recall records and run a paid UK history check, then view it, compare it with its logbook and send you photos and a video. A full mechanical inspection by an independent inspector can be added, quoted separately.

Government Pre-Shipping Inspection

Where the destination country requires a pre-export roadworthiness inspection, we arrange it with the approved inspection agency before the sailing so the vehicle is not held up on arrival. Quoted separately from the shipping price.

UK Vehicle Collection & Delivery

We collect any vehicle from any UK address and deliver it to the departure port at £1 per mile, driven on DVLA plates or moved on a carrier, timed to meet the booked sailing.

Secure Vehicle Storage

Vehicles wait with us in a secure compound between purchase and sailing, so there is no rush to move a car the day you buy it and nothing accumulating in storage charges at the port. Quoted separately from the shipping price.

Paintwork Reconditioning

Where a car would arrive the better for it, we can recondition the paintwork before it ships — worth doing while the vehicle is with us rather than paying to sort it out after it lands. Quoted separately from the shipping price.

UK Vehicle Customs Clearance

We make export declarations directly on the UK customs system and prepare every document needed at the UK port of exit, including the Bill of Lading, export certificate and DVLA export documentation.

Tax-Free Vehicle Supply and UK VAT

UK Preferential Origin (Reduced Import Duty)

Some UK-built vehicles may qualify for reduced or zero import duty. That depends on the UK having a trade agreement with the destination country and on the car meeting that agreement's rules of origin. During your quote, we'll confirm whether the vehicle you're interested in qualifies.

VAT-free Supply of VAT-Qualifying (VATQ) Cars

A VAT-registered dealer can sell a new car, or a used car that carries VAT on its full price, free of UK VAT when it is exported and HMRC's conditions are met. Used cars of that kind are known in the trade as VAT-qualifying: typically ex-rental or ex-lease cars, where the hire or leasing company reclaimed the VAT when it bought them. On a VAT-inclusive price, the VAT is one-sixth. A used car sold under the second-hand margin scheme is different: VAT is due only on the dealer's margin, and HMRC does not let a dealer zero-rate it as an ordinary export. We are not VAT registered, so the saving comes off the dealer's price, not as a refund from us. We arrange the export to Ecuador and give the dealer the proof of export it needs.

HMRC's Personal Export Scheme (PES)

The Personal Export Scheme lets overseas visitors and UK residents who are leaving the UK, and will stay outside it with the car for at least six months, buy a car free of VAT and use it here before it is exported. Only VAT-registered businesses can operate the scheme, so you buy from a dealer that runs it. The car must leave within 12 months of delivery for an overseas visitor, or 6 months for a UK resident, or the VAT becomes payable. It can suit anyone relocating to Ecuador: we find a dealer that runs the scheme and ship the car when you are ready. How the scheme works.

Ecuador Car Shipping FAQs

Common questions about shipping a vehicle from the UK to Ecuador.

How much does it cost to ship a car from the UK to Ecuador?

We quote Ecuador per booking rather than from a fixed rate card, because the cost depends on the vehicle, the sailing and the departure port. Call us on 01872 491409 and we will give you an itemised quote covering the UK-side work: customs clearance, port handling, DVLA paperwork and export documentation.

How long does shipping from the UK to Ecuador take?

Current carrier schedules show 2-7 weeks port to port, sailing from Liverpool, Felixstowe, London Gateway and Southampton. Transit varies with the routing and how many ports the vessel calls at on the way. The live sailing schedule on this page shows the actual dates for each upcoming sailing.

Which UK ports do sailings to Ecuador depart from?

Liverpool, Felixstowe, London Gateway and Southampton, with MSC, NYK RoRo, Hyundai Glovis and Wallenius Wilhelmsen. We collect vehicles from any UK address and deliver them to the departure port.

Which ports can my car be shipped to in Ecuador?

Manta and Guayaquil. Which one your vehicle sails to depends on the service and the date, and we confirm it when the booking is made.

Can I ship a used car to Ecuador?

Only in narrow cases. COMEX Resolution 009-2022 puts used vehicles on Ecuador's list of prohibited imports, so a used car cannot be shipped in for sale or for an ordinary private buyer. Donated special-purpose vehicles, such as ambulances and fire engines, are allowed. The main exception for individuals is a returning Ecuadorian migrant, who may bring one car of their own as household goods if its model year falls within the five years before import and its value within a cap of 80 basic unified salaries. A UK-market car is right-hand drive, so read the steering note on this page before relying on that route.

What paperwork does a returning migrant need to clear a car in Ecuador?

Three papers carry the claim. The Certificado de Migrante Retornado is issued in Ecuador by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, and can be requested only after you have arrived to settle. The sworn declaration of the household goods, on SENAE's forms, is made at an Ecuadorian consulate or before a notary. The car's invoice, title or registration must be in your name or a family member's and dated before you arrived. The car must travel in the same shipment as the rest of the household goods, and the exemption has to be claimed within 60 months of arrival. SENAE inspects the goods, checks the declared model year, specification and value against those papers and can ask for more.
