Shipping to Peru
Two Peruvian ports take the sailings on this route. Callao, beside Lima, is the largest port in Peru, and its North Multipurpose Terminal, run by APM Terminals, handles RoRo cargo as well as containers and bulk. Further south, on the Paracas peninsula near Pisco in the Ica region, the General San Martín port has been run since 2014 by the concessionaire Terminal Portuario Paracas and also handles RoRo vehicles. Car carriers on the current schedule take about 3-5 weeks and containers about 4-5 weeks.
Factory left-hand drive required
A used UK car cannot be imported into Peru for the road, because Peru admits a used car only if its steering was fitted on the left at the factory. SUNAT, the customs and tax authority, states the rule plainly: the steering must have been designed and installed on the left from the start, and a car built with right-hand drive and converted to the left is refused, however well the work was done. Apart from diplomats and donations to the state, the only exception is a collector car at least 35 years old, covered in the FAQs below. For anything newer, send us the model and specification you want and we will find a nearly new, low-mileage petrol car with factory left-hand drive in the UK or Europe and ship it to you on the usual sailings.
Tell us what you are looking forSteering is one of five minimum quality requirements that a used car must meet under Legislative Decree 843, as amended by Supreme Decree 005-2020-MTC. The car may be no more than two years old, counted from its model year, and a passenger car may have covered no more than 32,000 km. It must never have been declared a partial or total loss, or suffered substantial damage from a crash, fire or flood, and its emissions must be within Peru's legal limits. Used diesel vehicles are banned, from motorcycles to medium lorries; only the heaviest buses and lorries (categories M3 and N3) are exempt.
At clearance the importer files a technical sheet for used vehicles (Ficha Técnica de Importación de Vehículos Usados y Especiales), signed jointly with a registered mechanical engineer accredited by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and an inspection report from an authorised verification company (entidad verificadora) confirming that the car meets the technical and emissions rules. After clearance the car is first registered with SUNARP, which assigns the plate number and records the owner. The plates themselves are made through the Asociación Automotriz del Perú in Lima and through the chambers of commerce in the provinces.
Our part starts in the UK: finding the car, tax-free supply from the selling dealer where the car qualifies, collection, export clearance and the documents, and loading on a sailing for Pisco and Callao. The ships leave from Liverpool, Felixstowe, London Gateway and Southampton. In Peru we can arrange customs clearance, registration and delivery to your door through a local agent, quoted separately, or work with an agent of your choice.
Documentation Required for Booking
- Car Registration Document (V5 or Logbook) and Vehicle Invoice (or value).
- ID (one government-issued photo ID and one utility bill showing address).
Payment Terms / Modes
- A £1,000 deposit secures a vehicle we source or buy for you. It is part of the price, not an extra fee. If you cancel, our terms and conditions say what is refunded.
- The balance is due in full, in cleared funds, before the vehicle is loaded, unless your quotation sets out different terms.
- Bank transfer preferred. Card payments up to £5,000, with no fee on personal debit or credit cards.
- Letters of credit, cheques, money orders and cash are not accepted.
Our Other Services
UK Car Sourcing & Supply
We source any new or used vehicle from any manufacturer in the UK, through our network of franchised dealers, car auctions, classified listings and private sellers, then inspect, purchase and export it to your country.
Buy a Car in the UK on Your Behalf
We check, view and buy the UK car you've found, from a dealer or a private seller, then ship it to you, protecting you from the pitfalls of paying an unknown seller from overseas.
Tax-Free & VAT-Free Vehicle Supply
We find new and VAT-qualifying used cars from VAT-registered dealers who will sell them free of UK VAT for export, which takes a sixth off a VAT-inclusive price. The saving comes from the dealer, not as a refund from us: we are not VAT registered. We arrange the export and give the dealer the proof it needs.
New / Used Car Export
We export new and used cars from the UK every week, sourced from our dealer, auction and trade network or supplied by you, given a multi-point inspection before shipment and shipped worldwide by RoRo or container.
Pre-Purchase Inspections
Before you commit to a car, we check its DVLA, MOT and recall records and run a paid UK history check, then view it, compare it with its logbook and send you photos and a video. A full mechanical inspection by an independent inspector can be added, quoted separately.
Government Pre-Shipping Inspection
Where the destination country requires a pre-export roadworthiness inspection, we arrange it with the approved inspection agency before the sailing so the vehicle is not held up on arrival. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Collection & Delivery
We collect any vehicle from any UK address and deliver it to the departure port at £1 per mile, driven on DVLA plates or moved on a carrier, timed to meet the booked sailing.
Secure Vehicle Storage
Vehicles wait with us in a secure compound between purchase and sailing, so there is no rush to move a car the day you buy it and nothing accumulating in storage charges at the port. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
Paintwork Reconditioning
Where a car would arrive the better for it, we can recondition the paintwork before it ships — worth doing while the vehicle is with us rather than paying to sort it out after it lands. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Customs Clearance
We make export declarations directly on the UK customs system and prepare every document needed at the UK port of exit, including the Bill of Lading, export certificate and DVLA export documentation.

Tax-Free Vehicle Supply and UK VAT
UK Preferential Origin (Reduced Import Duty)
Some UK-built vehicles may qualify for reduced or zero import duty. That depends on the UK having a trade agreement with the destination country and on the car meeting that agreement's rules of origin. During your quote, we'll confirm whether the vehicle you're interested in qualifies.
VAT-free Supply of VAT-Qualifying (VATQ) Cars
A VAT-registered dealer can sell a new car, or a used car that carries VAT on its full price, free of UK VAT when it is exported and HMRC's conditions are met. Used cars of that kind are known in the trade as VAT-qualifying: typically ex-rental or ex-lease cars, where the hire or leasing company reclaimed the VAT when it bought them. On a VAT-inclusive price, the VAT is one-sixth. A used car sold under the second-hand margin scheme is different: VAT is due only on the dealer's margin, and HMRC does not let a dealer zero-rate it as an ordinary export. We are not VAT registered, so the saving comes off the dealer's price, not as a refund from us. We arrange the export to Peru and give the dealer the proof of export it needs.
HMRC's Personal Export Scheme (PES)
The Personal Export Scheme lets overseas visitors and UK residents who are leaving the UK, and will stay outside it with the car for at least six months, buy a car free of VAT and use it here before it is exported. Only VAT-registered businesses can operate the scheme, so you buy from a dealer that runs it. The car must leave within 12 months of delivery for an overseas visitor, or 6 months for a UK resident, or the VAT becomes payable. It can suit anyone relocating to Peru: we find a dealer that runs the scheme and ship the car when you are ready. How the scheme works.

Peru Car Shipping FAQs
Common questions about shipping a vehicle from the UK to Peru.
How much does it cost to ship a car from the UK to Peru?
We quote Peru per booking rather than from a fixed rate card, because the cost depends on the vehicle, the sailing and the departure port. Call us on 01872 491409 and we will give you an itemised quote covering the UK-side work: customs clearance, port handling, DVLA paperwork and export documentation.
How long does shipping from the UK to Peru take?
Current carrier schedules show 3-6 weeks port to port, sailing from Liverpool, Felixstowe, London Gateway and Southampton. Transit varies with the routing and how many ports the vessel calls at on the way. The live sailing schedule on this page shows the actual dates for each upcoming sailing.
Which UK ports do sailings to Peru depart from?
Liverpool, Felixstowe, London Gateway and Southampton, with MSC, NYK RoRo and Wallenius Wilhelmsen. We collect vehicles from any UK address and deliver them to the departure port.
Which ports can my car be shipped to in Peru?
Pisco and Callao. Which one your vehicle sails to depends on the service and the date, and we confirm it when the booking is made.
How old can a used car be to ship it to Peru?
No more than two years, counted from its model year. A used passenger car must also have covered no more than 32,000 km, have had its steering fitted on the left at the factory, never have been declared a loss or badly damaged, and meet Peru's emissions limits. Used diesel cars are banned. These are the minimum quality requirements SUNAT applies under Legislative Decree 843 and Supreme Decree 005-2020-MTC, so in practice the car has to be a nearly new, low-mileage petrol model.
Can I import a classic car into Peru?
A collector car can come in if it is a passenger car at least 35 years old from its manufacture, with that age properly proven. SUNAT exempts such cars from the minimum quality requirements for used imports, and the importer gives customs a sworn declaration that the car is for a collection. It may arrive restored or be restored in Peru, though not in the CETICOS free zones or ZOFRATACNA. Check with SUNARP whether a right-hand-drive collector car can be registered for the road before you buy one in the UK.
