Cost of Shipping a Car from the UK to Kenya (Mombasa)
Mombasa is Kenya's principal port for vehicle imports, and we handle every detail with our shipping partners: just choose your vehicle and leave the rest to us. The total cost of shipping depends on the vehicle make, model and most importantly size. We work directly with all shipping lines in the UK to arrange regular and reliable vehicle exports from the UK to Kenya (Mombasa). Vehicles travel by either RoRo or container — see pricing for both below.
Roll-on / Roll-off (RoRo)
The cheapest way to move a single vehicle, and the option most customers choose.

Approximate — call for the latest rates. These are indicative shipping rates from our published rate table for Mombasa. They move with the market and with the vehicle, and a full export quote covers the UK-side work listed below as well, so treat them as a guide rather than a final price. See the full rate table or ask us for an itemised quote.
What a full export quote covers
- Loading and lashing vehicle into ship
- UK customs export and clearance
- UK port handling charges
- DVLA documentation and export certification
- Export documentation (e.g. Bill of Lading)
- Posting of the Export Documents from UK by UPS/DHL
- Shipping of the vehicle from the UK to Destination Port
Not covered
- Pre-Export Inspection (if required)
- Marine Insurance (container only)
- Collection and/or delivery of the vehicle
- All destination country's import fees
Apart from import duty, taxes, port storage and demurrage at the destination, which the importer always pays, we can add any of these to your quotation, priced separately, along with customs clearance, registration and delivery to your door through a local agent.
We provide a clear, itemised export quote before you commit to anything — and our Kenya Import Duty Calculator lets you estimate KRA taxes for a specific vehicle before you buy.

Our Other Services
UK Car Sourcing & Supply
We source any new or used vehicle from any manufacturer in the UK, through our network of franchised dealers, car auctions, classified listings and private sellers, then inspect, purchase and export it to your country.
Buy a Car in the UK on Your Behalf
We check, view and buy the UK car you've found, from a dealer or a private seller, then ship it to you, protecting you from the pitfalls of paying an unknown seller from overseas.
Tax-Free & VAT-Free Vehicle Supply
We find new and VAT-qualifying used cars from VAT-registered dealers who will sell them free of UK VAT for export, which takes a sixth off a VAT-inclusive price. The saving comes from the dealer, not as a refund from us: we are not VAT registered. We arrange the export and give the dealer the proof it needs.
New / Used Car Export
We export new and used cars from the UK every week, sourced from our dealer, auction and trade network or supplied by you, given a multi-point inspection before shipment and shipped worldwide by RoRo or container.
Pre-Purchase Inspections
Before you commit to a car, we check its DVLA, MOT and recall records and run a paid UK history check, then view it, compare it with its logbook and send you photos and a video. A full mechanical inspection by an independent inspector can be added, quoted separately.
Government Pre-Shipping Inspection
Kenya requires a pre-export roadworthiness inspection by a KEBS-approved agency. We arrange the inspection before the sailing so the vehicle clears customs in Mombasa without delays. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Collection & Delivery
We collect any vehicle from any UK address and deliver it to the departure port at £1 per mile, driven on DVLA plates or moved on a carrier, timed to meet the booked sailing.
Secure Vehicle Storage
Vehicles wait with us in a secure compound between purchase and sailing, so there is no rush to move a car the day you buy it and nothing accumulating in storage charges at the port. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
Paintwork Reconditioning
Where a car would arrive the better for it, we can recondition the paintwork before it ships — worth doing while the vehicle is with us rather than paying to sort it out after it lands. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Customs Clearance
We make export declarations directly on the UK customs system and prepare every document needed at the UK port of exit, including the Bill of Lading, export certificate and DVLA export documentation.

Kenya Import Duty Calculator
Estimate the customs value and taxes for a specific make and model before you commit to buying, using KRA's official Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) schedule and depreciation rules (July 2025).
We could not load KRA's price list just now.
or contact us for an estimate.
Customs Value
- Base CRSP value
- Depreciation applied
- Customs (taxable) value
Estimated Taxes
- Import Duty
- Excise Duty
- VAT
- IDF
- RDL
Import Duty + Excise Duty + VAT + IDF + RDL only — matches KRA's "Grand Total" convention. Does not include the Customs Value itself.
Calculated as in KRA's TEMPLATE 2025 sheet: Customs Value = (CRSP ÷ 1.25) × (1 − Depreciation) × (1 − Extra Depreciation) ÷ (1 + Import Duty) ÷ (1 + Excise Duty) ÷ (1 + VAT), at the rates in force from 1 July 2026. Motorcycles leave out the excise term, as on KRA's motorcycle tab, because their excise is a flat fee. IDF is 2.5% and RDL 2% of the customs value, with no minimum.
Where we differ from the sheet: for prime movers and 100% electric vehicles it values the vehicle at 35% import duty but charges 25%. Kenya's rate for both is 35% (EAC Gazette, 30 June 2026) for one year (FY 2026/27), so we charge 35%. The customs value is the sheet's; the taxes come out about 20% higher than its worked figure for electric cars and 23% for prime movers.
What we assume: KRA normally classes double-cab pick-ups as passenger vehicles (HS 8703), so above 3000cc petrol or 2500cc diesel they pay 35% excise. If your vehicle is assessed as a goods vehicle (8704) it pays 25%: choose the >1500cc category to compare. Crew-cab lorries (Isuzu N/F-series, Iveco Daily, Hino 300) are goods vehicles. Tractor units for semi-trailers are prime movers (HS 8701) and pay no excise, whatever their fuel, including the JAC HFC4251KR1 and FAW CA4080 that KRA lists as trucks. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids are not on KRA's 35% excise tab, which covers only petrol- or diesel-only cars (HS 8703.24.90 / 8703.33.90), so above 1500cc they pay 25%. Electric motorcycles pay no excise and 0% VAT; the sheet has no tab for them, so we value them as on its motorcycle tab, dividing by 1.16 for VAT even though no VAT is charged.
Electric vans and lorries (HS 8704.60) pay 20% excise, as a van of up to 1500cc does: the Excise Duty Act's 10% rate for electric vehicles names only cars and buses (HS 8703.80 and 8702.40). Electric buses pay 10% excise and no VAT, as they are zero-rated; we value them as on the sheet's electric tab, dividing by 1.16.
Every tabulation tab is itself marked "GUIDELINE SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION" by KRA, so treat the result as an estimate: we confirm the duty category and current rates for your vehicle when we quote.
Base CRSP values and depreciation schedule sourced from Kenya's Current Retail Selling Price schedule (July 2025). This tool provides an estimate only and is not a substitute for advice from KRA or a licensed clearing agent.
Vehicle Age & Import Eligibility
Kenya generally restricts direct import of used vehicles to those no older than 8 years from the year of first registration. This is one of the first things we check when helping you select a vehicle for export to Kenya.
How KRA Values Your Vehicle
Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) doesn't use your purchase price directly. Instead, it values the vehicle using its Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) schedule — a reference price per make, model and variant — and then applies a depreciation rate based on the vehicle's age:
- 1Find the CRSP — the reference retail price for that exact make, model and variant
- 2Apply depreciation — from around 20% for a 1-2 year old car up to 65% for an 7-8 year old car
- 3Derive the customs value — the taxable base that Import Duty, Excise Duty, VAT, IDF and RDL are all calculated from
Understanding KRA Import Taxes
Once the customs value is established, KRA applies the following charges (rates in force from 1 July 2026):
- Import Duty — 35% of customs value for cars (electric included), pick-ups, lorries, buses, prime movers and trailers; 25% for motorcycles
- Excise Duty — 10-35% depending on engine size and fuel type; a flat fee on motorcycles, and none on electric motorcycles, prime movers or trailers
- VAT — 16%, on customs value plus Import Duty and Excise Duty (0% on electric motorcycles and electric buses)
- IDF (Import Declaration Fee) — 2.5% of customs value
- RDL (Railway Development Levy) — 2% of customs value
Note: KRA's own TEMPLATE 2025 tabs are marked "guideline subject to verification" — we confirm the correct duty category and current rates for your specific vehicle before quoting.
Tax-Free Vehicle Supply and UK VAT
UK Preferential Origin (Reduced Import Duty)
Some UK-built vehicles may qualify for reduced or zero import duty. That depends on the UK having a trade agreement with the destination country and on the car meeting that agreement's rules of origin. During your quote, we'll confirm whether the vehicle you're interested in qualifies.
VAT-free Supply of VAT-Qualifying (VATQ) Cars
A VAT-registered dealer can sell a new car, or a used car that carries VAT on its full price, free of UK VAT when it is exported and HMRC's conditions are met. Used cars of that kind are known in the trade as VAT-qualifying: typically ex-rental or ex-lease cars, where the hire or leasing company reclaimed the VAT when it bought them. On a VAT-inclusive price, the VAT is one-sixth. A used car sold under the second-hand margin scheme is different: VAT is due only on the dealer's margin, and HMRC does not let a dealer zero-rate it as an ordinary export. We are not VAT registered, so the saving comes off the dealer's price, not as a refund from us. We arrange the export to Kenya and give the dealer the proof of export it needs.
HMRC's Personal Export Scheme (PES)
The Personal Export Scheme lets overseas visitors and UK residents who are leaving the UK, and will stay outside it with the car for at least six months, buy a car free of VAT and use it here before it is exported. Only VAT-registered businesses can operate the scheme, so you buy from a dealer that runs it. The car must leave within 12 months of delivery for an overseas visitor, or 6 months for a UK resident, or the VAT becomes payable. It can suit anyone relocating to Kenya: we find a dealer that runs the scheme and ship the car when you are ready. How the scheme works.
Inspection & Registration
Before your vehicle leaves the UK, and once it arrives in Kenya, a few standard steps apply:
- Pre-shipment roadworthiness inspection by a KEBS-approved inspection agency
- Customs clearance and payment of duty at Mombasa
- Registration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA)
We'll help you understand what's required at each step, so there are no surprises once the car arrives. We can arrange customs clearance, registration and delivery to your door through a local agent, quoted separately, or work with an agent of your choice.
Arrival in Kenya: What Happens Next
Once your vehicle arrives at Mombasa:
- Customs clearance is handled by a local agent, one we arrange or one you choose
- Import Duty, Excise Duty, VAT, IDF and RDL are settled with KRA
- NTSA registration and number plates are arranged
- Insurance is arranged before the vehicle is driven away
At every stage, we're on hand to guide you — even after the car has left the UK.

Kenya Car Shipping FAQs
Common questions about shipping a vehicle from the UK to Kenya.
How much does it cost to ship a car from the UK to Kenya?
RoRo shipping to Mombasa starts from around £1,214, with a 20ft private container from about £1,894 and a 40ft container from about £2,604. Those are indicative rates from our published rate table and move with the market, so call us for the latest. A full export quote also covers the UK-side work: customs clearance, port handling, DVLA paperwork and export documentation.
How long does shipping from the UK to Kenya take?
Most RoRo sailings to Mombasa take 3-5 weeks from departure, and the full spread across every sailing we have listed is 3-6 weeks. Container shipments typically take 9-10 weeks, because they route through a transhipment hub rather than sailing direct. See the live sailing schedule on this page for the actual dates of each upcoming departure.
Is there an age limit on cars imported into Kenya?
Yes. Kenya only permits the import of vehicles less than 8 years old from the year of first registration, so check the registration date carefully before buying a car for export.
Does my car need an inspection before shipping to Kenya?
Yes. Kenya requires a pre-export roadworthiness inspection by a KEBS-approved agency before the vehicle ships. We can arrange this inspection, quoted separately from our shipping price.
What taxes will I pay when my car arrives in Kenya?
The Kenya Revenue Authority charges import duty, excise duty and VAT, calculated on the vehicle’s customs value under the Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) system. Our Kenya Import Duty Calculator gives an estimate for a specific vehicle before you buy.
Which UK port do you ship to Kenya from?
Kenya sailings depart from Southampton, Liverpool, Felixstowe, London Gateway and Sheerness, with vehicles delivered to the port of Mombasa. We collect vehicles from any UK address and deliver them to the departure port.
