Shipping to South Africa
Our South African sailings discharge at Durban, Cape Town, East London and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha). Transnet Port Terminals runs the car terminals at Durban, East London and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), the ports the RoRo lines call at, and between April 2025 and mid-February 2026 those three terminals handled 792,574 vehicles, imports, exports and transhipments together. The current schedule has RoRo sailings with Höegh Autoliners, Sallaum Lines and Wallenius Wilhelmsen and container sailings with MSC, the containers transhipped on the way. South Africa drives on the left, so a UK car's steering is on the correct side; ITAC's application form says plainly that a left-hand-drive car would not be registered.
Permit first, then ship
South Africa allows a used car in only under an import permit from the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC), and no permit is issued for a car meant for resale. ITAC's guidelines set out who qualifies: returning residents and nationals who have spent at least six months abroad working, studying or doing research, for a car registered in their name for that same period; immigrants, once the Department of Home Affairs has issued permanent residence; and South African citizens importing an inherited car, a specially designed car for a disabled driver, a racing car for the track, or a vintage car of 40 years or more or a recognised international collector's item. Every permit carries an undertaking not to sell or otherwise dispose of the car for two years. ITAC's guidance adds two warnings: the car may not be shipped until the permit has been issued, and a returning resident may not send it ahead of their own permanent return. Every imported vehicle also needs a Letter of Authority from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), applied for before the import. Tell us which category you fall into and we will plan the UK side around those two documents.
Tell us what you are looking forSARS clears the car against four documents: the customs clearance papers, the NRCS Letter of Authority, the ITAC permit and an Interpol clearance certificate. One car per family can be entered under a duty rebate on a permanent change of residence, provided it was owned and used for at least 12 months before departure and is not sold or otherwise disposed of within 20 months of entry. The car is then registered at the local registering authority and recorded on eNaTIS. Keep the full V5C: ITAC wants the registration certificate in the applicant's name, and only its permanent export section goes to DVLA.
On the UK side we source the car, arrange tax-free supply from the selling dealer where it qualifies, collect it, complete UK export clearance and the DVLA paperwork, and see it loaded. Sailings leave from Southampton, Felixstowe, London Gateway, Liverpool, Newcastle and Bristol. At the South African end we can arrange clearance, registration and delivery to your door through a local agent, quoted separately, or work with an agent of your choice.
Documentation Required for Booking
- Car Registration Document (V5 or Logbook) and Vehicle Invoice (or value).
- ID (one government-issued photo ID and one utility bill showing address).
Payment Terms / Modes
- A £1,000 deposit secures a vehicle we source or buy for you. It is part of the price, not an extra fee. If you cancel, our terms and conditions say what is refunded.
- The balance is due in full, in cleared funds, before the vehicle is loaded, unless your quotation sets out different terms.
- Bank transfer preferred. Card payments up to £5,000, with no fee on personal debit or credit cards.
- Letters of credit, cheques, money orders and cash are not accepted.
Our Other Services
UK Car Sourcing & Supply
We source any new or used vehicle from any manufacturer in the UK, through our network of franchised dealers, car auctions, classified listings and private sellers, then inspect, purchase and export it to your country.
Buy a Car in the UK on Your Behalf
We check, view and buy the UK car you've found, from a dealer or a private seller, then ship it to you, protecting you from the pitfalls of paying an unknown seller from overseas.
Tax-Free & VAT-Free Vehicle Supply
We find new and VAT-qualifying used cars from VAT-registered dealers who will sell them free of UK VAT for export, which takes a sixth off a VAT-inclusive price. The saving comes from the dealer, not as a refund from us: we are not VAT registered. We arrange the export and give the dealer the proof it needs.
New / Used Car Export
We export new and used cars from the UK every week, sourced from our dealer, auction and trade network or supplied by you, given a multi-point inspection before shipment and shipped worldwide by RoRo or container.
Pre-Purchase Inspections
Before you commit to a car, we check its DVLA, MOT and recall records and run a paid UK history check, then view it, compare it with its logbook and send you photos and a video. A full mechanical inspection by an independent inspector can be added, quoted separately.
Government Pre-Shipping Inspection
Where the destination country requires a pre-export roadworthiness inspection, we arrange it with the approved inspection agency before the sailing so the vehicle is not held up on arrival. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Collection & Delivery
We collect any vehicle from any UK address and deliver it to the departure port at £1 per mile, driven on DVLA plates or moved on a carrier, timed to meet the booked sailing.
Secure Vehicle Storage
Vehicles wait with us in a secure compound between purchase and sailing, so there is no rush to move a car the day you buy it and nothing accumulating in storage charges at the port. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
Paintwork Reconditioning
Where a car would arrive the better for it, we can recondition the paintwork before it ships — worth doing while the vehicle is with us rather than paying to sort it out after it lands. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Customs Clearance
We make export declarations directly on the UK customs system and prepare every document needed at the UK port of exit, including the Bill of Lading, export certificate and DVLA export documentation.

Tax-Free Vehicle Supply and UK VAT
UK Preferential Origin (Reduced Import Duty)
Some UK-built vehicles may qualify for reduced or zero import duty. That depends on the UK having a trade agreement with the destination country and on the car meeting that agreement's rules of origin. During your quote, we'll confirm whether the vehicle you're interested in qualifies.
VAT-free Supply of VAT-Qualifying (VATQ) Cars
A VAT-registered dealer can sell a new car, or a used car that carries VAT on its full price, free of UK VAT when it is exported and HMRC's conditions are met. Used cars of that kind are known in the trade as VAT-qualifying: typically ex-rental or ex-lease cars, where the hire or leasing company reclaimed the VAT when it bought them. On a VAT-inclusive price, the VAT is one-sixth. A used car sold under the second-hand margin scheme is different: VAT is due only on the dealer's margin, and HMRC does not let a dealer zero-rate it as an ordinary export. We are not VAT registered, so the saving comes off the dealer's price, not as a refund from us. We arrange the export to South Africa and give the dealer the proof of export it needs.
HMRC's Personal Export Scheme (PES)
The Personal Export Scheme lets overseas visitors and UK residents who are leaving the UK, and will stay outside it with the car for at least six months, buy a car free of VAT and use it here before it is exported. Only VAT-registered businesses can operate the scheme, so you buy from a dealer that runs it. The car must leave within 12 months of delivery for an overseas visitor, or 6 months for a UK resident, or the VAT becomes payable. It can suit anyone relocating to South Africa: we find a dealer that runs the scheme and ship the car when you are ready. How the scheme works.

Common questions about shipping a vehicle from the UK to South Africa.
How much does it cost to ship a car from the UK to South Africa?
RoRo shipping starts from around £988 per vehicle, and a 20ft container from about £1,651. Those are indicative rates from our published rate table and move with the market, so call us for the latest. In a shared container departing Grays, Essex, a saloon costs £1,364 and an SUV £1,702 per vehicle. A full export quote also covers the UK-side work: customs clearance, port handling, DVLA paperwork and export documentation.
How long does shipping from the UK to South Africa take?
Current carrier schedules show 2-7 weeks port to port, sailing from Southampton, Felixstowe, London Gateway, Liverpool, Newcastle and Bristol. Transit varies with the routing and how many ports the vessel calls at on the way. The live sailing schedule on this page shows the actual dates for each upcoming sailing.
Which UK ports do sailings to South Africa depart from?
Southampton, Felixstowe, London Gateway, Liverpool, Newcastle and Bristol, with Höegh Autoliners, MSC, Sallaum Lines and Wallenius Wilhelmsen. We collect vehicles from any UK address and deliver them to the departure port.
Which ports can my car be shipped to in South Africa?
Durban, Cape Town, East London and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha). Which one your vehicle sails to depends on the service and the date, and we confirm it when the booking is made.
Can I ship a used car to South Africa to sell it?
No. ITAC issues used-vehicle import permits only in defined cases: returning residents and nationals who have spent at least six months abroad working, studying or doing research and had the car registered in their name for that period; immigrants whose permanent residence has already been granted; and South African citizens importing an inherited car, a specially designed car for a disabled driver, a racing car for track use only, or a vintage car of 40 years or more or an international collector's item. It issues no permit for resale or commercial purposes, every permit holder undertakes not to sell or dispose of the car for two years, and ITAC says the car may not be shipped until the permit has been issued. A new car is different: new passenger vehicles are not subject to ITAC import control, though duty is payable.
What paperwork does a returning South African need to bring a car home from the UK?
Three permits and the car's own papers. First the ITAC import permit on form IE462, with the UK registration certificate (V5C) in your name, your South African ID or passport and a signed, dated letter on your employer's letterhead confirming the start and end of your employment abroad; pay slips, contracts and work permits are not accepted. ITAC charges nothing and takes around five to six working days. Second the NRCS Letter of Authority, applied for on form LoA1 before the car is imported and usually ready in four to six days. Third, for clearance, SARS asks for the customs clearance documents, the NRCS letter, the ITAC permit and an Interpol clearance certificate. If you are changing residence permanently, one car per family can be entered under rebate item 407.04 provided you owned and used it for at least 12 months before leaving, and it then cannot be sold or disposed of within 20 months. Registration follows at your local registering authority on eNaTIS.
