Approximate — call for the latest rates. These are indicative shipping rates from our published rate table for Tema, Takoradi. They move with the market and with the vehicle, and a full export quote covers the UK-side work listed below as well, so treat them as a guide rather than a final price. The table does not publish a RoRo rate for Ghana, so that one is quoted per booking — we do sail it, and the schedule below shows the departures. See the full rate table or ask us for an itemised quote.
What a full export quote covers

Shipping to Ghana
Our Ghana sailings discharge at Tema and Takoradi. Tema, 30 km from Accra, is Ghana's largest port: it receives more than 1,500 ship calls a year, RoRo car carriers among them, and with Takoradi carries 85% of the country's trade. Both ports are run by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA). GPHA lists five inland clearance depots at Tema that receive and deliver imported vehicles, among them its own Golden Jubilee Terminal, which handles the vehicles that arrive in containers, and private depots including Safebond Car Terminal and Tema Bonded Terminal. Takoradi, a commercial port since 1928, handled 27.7% of the country's seaborne traffic in 2025 and advertises a two-day documentation, clearance and delivery procedure. The current schedule has RoRo sailings with Grimaldi and container sailings with MSC.
No right-hand drive without ministerial approval
Ghana prohibits the import of a right-hand-drive car without ministerial approval, so a car bought in the UK cannot simply be shipped to Tema and registered. That is section 58 of the Customs Act 2015 as amended in 2020, and Ghana Customs says that even an approved right-hand-drive vehicle is dismantled at the port and has to be refitted as left-hand drive before it can go on the road. The Road Traffic Regulations 2026 (L.I. 2519), in force since 28 May 2026, close the same door at registration: the DVLA may not register a right-hand-steering vehicle without the Transport Minister's approval, and driving one on a Ghanaian road without the Minister's authorisation is an offence. For everything shipped since 1 October 2026, the Ghana Standards Authority also bars used vehicles more than 15 years old, flood- or fire-damaged vehicles, vehicles with a broken, cracked, bent or twisted chassis or safety cage, vehicles assembled from spare parts and vehicles whose speedometer does not read in kilometres per hour. The inspection and Certificate of Conformance that were to be required before shipment were suspended by the Authority on 5 October 2026, and it will announce a new start date. Far better to start from the right side of the road: send us your shortlist, whether that is a Toyota, a Hyundai or a Land Rover, and we will source a qualifying left-hand-drive example and ship it in for you.
Tell us what you are looking forClearance at either port runs through ICUMS, the Ghana Revenue Authority's Integrated Customs Management System. Unless you register with the GRA Customs Division as a self-declarant, a licensed customs house agent lodges the declaration, and the GRA's vehicle page asks for two documents to start: the bill of lading or waybill and the vehicle's title, which for a UK car is the V5C less the permanent export section sent to DVLA. ICUMS assesses the duty from the chassis number, make, model and year, and the consignee can pay it before the ship docks; the importer also needs a Ghana Card PIN or a GRA taxpayer number. Once the shipping agent releases the car and Customs has examined or scanned it at the gate, it goes to a private vehicle testing station for inspection and is registered with Ghana's DVLA against the customs entry documents, the inspection report and the owner's Ghana Card.
On the UK side we source the car, arrange tax-free supply from the selling dealer where it qualifies, collect it, complete UK export clearance and the DVLA paperwork, and see it loaded. Sailings leave from Felixstowe, London Gateway, Liverpool and Tilbury. At the Ghanaian end we can arrange clearance at Tema or Takoradi, registration and delivery to your door through a local agent, quoted separately, or work with an agent of your choice.
Documentation Required for Booking
- Car Registration Document (V5 or Logbook) and Vehicle Invoice (or value).
- ID (one government-issued photo ID and one utility bill showing address).
Payment Terms / Modes
- A £1,000 deposit secures a vehicle we source or buy for you. It is part of the price, not an extra fee. If you cancel, our terms and conditions say what is refunded.
- The balance is due in full, in cleared funds, before the vehicle is loaded, unless your quotation sets out different terms.
- Bank transfer preferred. Card payments up to £5,000, with no fee on personal debit or credit cards.
- Letters of credit, cheques, money orders and cash are not accepted.
Our Other Services
UK Car Sourcing & Supply
We source any new or used vehicle from any manufacturer in the UK, through our network of franchised dealers, car auctions, classified listings and private sellers, then inspect, purchase and export it to your country.
Buy a Car in the UK on Your Behalf
We check, view and buy the UK car you've found, from a dealer or a private seller, then ship it to you, protecting you from the pitfalls of paying an unknown seller from overseas.
Tax-Free & VAT-Free Vehicle Supply
We find new and VAT-qualifying used cars from VAT-registered dealers who will sell them free of UK VAT for export, which takes a sixth off a VAT-inclusive price. The saving comes from the dealer, not as a refund from us: we are not VAT registered. We arrange the export and give the dealer the proof it needs.
New / Used Car Export
We export new and used cars from the UK every week, sourced from our dealer, auction and trade network or supplied by you, given a multi-point inspection before shipment and shipped worldwide by RoRo or container.
Pre-Purchase Inspections
Before you commit to a car, we check its DVLA, MOT and recall records and run a paid UK history check, then view it, compare it with its logbook and send you photos and a video. A full mechanical inspection by an independent inspector can be added, quoted separately.
Government Pre-Shipping Inspection
Where the destination country requires a pre-export roadworthiness inspection, we arrange it with the approved inspection agency before the sailing so the vehicle is not held up on arrival. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Collection & Delivery
We collect any vehicle from any UK address and deliver it to the departure port at £1 per mile, driven on DVLA plates or moved on a carrier, timed to meet the booked sailing.
Secure Vehicle Storage
Vehicles wait with us in a secure compound between purchase and sailing, so there is no rush to move a car the day you buy it and nothing accumulating in storage charges at the port. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
Paintwork Reconditioning
Where a car would arrive the better for it, we can recondition the paintwork before it ships — worth doing while the vehicle is with us rather than paying to sort it out after it lands. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Customs Clearance
We make export declarations directly on the UK customs system and prepare every document needed at the UK port of exit, including the Bill of Lading, export certificate and DVLA export documentation.

Tax-Free Vehicle Supply and UK VAT
UK Preferential Origin (Reduced Import Duty)
Some UK-built vehicles may qualify for reduced or zero import duty. That depends on the UK having a trade agreement with the destination country and on the car meeting that agreement's rules of origin. During your quote, we'll confirm whether the vehicle you're interested in qualifies.
VAT-free Supply of VAT-Qualifying (VATQ) Cars
A VAT-registered dealer can sell a new car, or a used car that carries VAT on its full price, free of UK VAT when it is exported and HMRC's conditions are met. Used cars of that kind are known in the trade as VAT-qualifying: typically ex-rental or ex-lease cars, where the hire or leasing company reclaimed the VAT when it bought them. On a VAT-inclusive price, the VAT is one-sixth. A used car sold under the second-hand margin scheme is different: VAT is due only on the dealer's margin, and HMRC does not let a dealer zero-rate it as an ordinary export. We are not VAT registered, so the saving comes off the dealer's price, not as a refund from us. We arrange the export to Ghana and give the dealer the proof of export it needs.
HMRC's Personal Export Scheme (PES)
The Personal Export Scheme lets overseas visitors and UK residents who are leaving the UK, and will stay outside it with the car for at least six months, buy a car free of VAT and use it here before it is exported. Only VAT-registered businesses can operate the scheme, so you buy from a dealer that runs it. The car must leave within 12 months of delivery for an overseas visitor, or 6 months for a UK resident, or the VAT becomes payable. It can suit anyone relocating to Ghana: we find a dealer that runs the scheme and ship the car when you are ready. How the scheme works.

Ghana Car Shipping FAQs
Common questions about shipping a vehicle from the UK to Ghana.
How much does it cost to ship a car from the UK to Ghana?
A 20ft container starts from around £1,651 per vehicle. Those are indicative rates from our published rate table and move with the market, so call us for the latest. A full export quote also covers the UK-side work: customs clearance, port handling, DVLA paperwork and export documentation.
How long does shipping from the UK to Ghana take?
Current carrier schedules show 1-4 weeks port to port, sailing from Felixstowe, London Gateway, Liverpool and Tilbury. Transit varies with the routing and how many ports the vessel calls at on the way. The live sailing schedule on this page shows the actual dates for each upcoming sailing.
Which UK ports do sailings to Ghana depart from?
Felixstowe, London Gateway, Liverpool and Tilbury, with MSC and Grimaldi. We collect vehicles from any UK address and deliver them to the departure port.
Which ports can my car be shipped to in Ghana?
Tema and Takoradi. Which one your vehicle sails to depends on the service and the date, and we confirm it when the booking is made.
How does a car get from the UK to Tema or Takoradi?
By RoRo with Grimaldi, sailing from Tilbury, or in a container with MSC from Felixstowe, London Gateway and Liverpool. Both ports belong to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. At Tema the port's inland clearance depots receive and deliver imported vehicles, and a car that arrives in a container is handled by GPHA's own Golden Jubilee Terminal, which delivers between 7.30am and 7.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 4.30pm on Saturdays. Takoradi, a commercial port since 1928, advertises a two-day documentation, clearance and delivery procedure. The live schedule on this page shows the next sailings to each port.
What happens when my car lands at Tema?
Clearance goes through ICUMS, the Ghana Revenue Authority's Integrated Customs Management System. Unless you have registered with the GRA Customs Division as a self-declarant, a licensed customs house agent lodges the declaration for you, and the GRA's vehicle page asks for two documents to start: the bill of lading or waybill and the vehicle's title, which for a UK car is the V5C less the permanent export section that goes to DVLA. ICUMS assesses the duty from the chassis number, make, model and year, and the consignee can pay it before the ship docks. The importer also needs a Ghana Card PIN or a GRA taxpayer number. Once the shipping agent has released the car and Customs has examined or scanned it on the way out of the port, it goes to a private vehicle testing station for inspection and is registered with Ghana's DVLA against the customs entry documents, the inspection report, passport photographs and the owner's Ghana Card.
