Cost of Shipping a Car from the UK to Oman (Sohar, Salalah)

The total cost of shipping depends on the vehicle make, model and most importantly size. We work directly with all shipping lines in the UK to arrange regular and reliable vehicle exports from the UK to Oman (Sohar, Salalah).

Roll-on / Roll-off (RoRo)

The cheapest way to move a single vehicle, and the option most customers choose.

  • From, per vehicle£1,096

Container Shipping

Extra security, or for multiple vehicles and personal items.

  • 20ft container, from£1,516
  • 40ft container, from£1,997

Approximate — call for the latest rates. These are indicative shipping rates from our published rate table for Sohar. They move with the market and with the vehicle, and a full export quote covers the UK-side work listed below as well, so treat them as a guide rather than a final price. See the full rate table or ask us for an itemised quote.

What a full export quote covers

  • Loading and lashing vehicle into ship
  • UK customs export and clearance
  • UK port handling charges
  • DVLA documentation and export certification
  • Export documentation (e.g. Bill of Lading)
  • Posting of the Export Documents from UK by UPS/DHL
  • Shipping of the vehicle from the UK to Destination Port

Not covered

  • Pre-Export Inspection (if required)
  • Marine Insurance (container only)
  • Collection and/or delivery of the vehicle
  • All destination country's import fees

Apart from import duty, taxes, port storage and demurrage at the destination, which the importer always pays, we can add any of these to your quotation, priced separately, along with customs clearance, registration and delivery to your door through a local agent.

Shipping to Oman

Cars are no longer landed at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat: on 31 August 2014 Oman moved its container, general-cargo and ro-ro vehicle traffic to Sohar, and the Muscat port has been run as a cruise and tourism port since. Sohar's port is developed and run by a joint venture of the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the Government of Oman. Höegh Autoliners lists Sohar and Salalah as its Oman ports, although its published schedule still names Port Sultan Qaboos on some calls, which is why that name appears in the sailing table, so we confirm the actual discharge port for your sailing when you book.

Decision 26/94 applies

Oman bans right-hand-drive cars from its roads, so a UK car cannot be driven there. Royal Oman Police Decision 26/94 lets a right-hand-drive vehicle into the country only as trade goods, to be re-exported or broken for spare parts: duty is paid, it leaves the port on a truck or on tow, and driving it anywhere in the Sultanate is forbidden. Oman's prohibited-imports list, as the WTO's 2021 review sets it out, also covers vehicles converted from right-hand to left-hand drive, so a conversion is no way round it. Let us do the buying instead: tell us the model, trim and colour you are after and we will find the left-hand-drive equivalent in the UK or Europe and ship it out to you.

Tell us what you are looking for

A left-hand-drive car has its own limits to meet. Oman Customs admits a used private vehicle only if it is under seven years old, unless it is a classic approved by the General Traffic Department, and it must comply with the standard specifications in force in Oman. Customs and vehicle registration both sit with the Royal Oman Police, through its General Directorate of Customs and Directorate General of Traffic. For importers and exporters in the trade, Oman Customs lists a permit from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion to import second-hand vehicles, which covers up to 50 vehicles over several shipments and is valid for a year.

On the UK side we cover sourcing a left-hand-drive car, tax-free supply where it qualifies, collection, export clearance and loading. Sailings leave from Southampton. We can arrange customs clearance, registration and delivery to your door through a local agent, quoted separately, or work with an agent of your choice.

Documentation Required for Booking

  • Car Registration Document (V5 or Logbook) and Vehicle Invoice (or value).
  • ID (one government-issued photo ID and one utility bill showing address).

Payment Terms / Modes

  • A £1,000 deposit secures a vehicle we source or buy for you. It is part of the price, not an extra fee. If you cancel, our terms and conditions say what is refunded.
  • The balance is due in full, in cleared funds, before the vehicle is loaded, unless your quotation sets out different terms.
  • Bank transfer preferred. Card payments up to £5,000, with no fee on personal debit or credit cards.
  • Letters of credit, cheques, money orders and cash are not accepted.

Our Other Services

UK Car Sourcing & Supply

We source any new or used vehicle from any manufacturer in the UK, through our network of franchised dealers, car auctions, classified listings and private sellers, then inspect, purchase and export it to your country.

Buy a Car in the UK on Your Behalf

We check, view and buy the UK car you've found, from a dealer or a private seller, then ship it to you, protecting you from the pitfalls of paying an unknown seller from overseas.

Tax-Free & VAT-Free Vehicle Supply

We find new and VAT-qualifying used cars, buy them from UK dealers and sell them to you free of UK VAT for export when the conditions HMRC sets are met, which takes a sixth off a VAT-inclusive price. We handle the export and keep the proof of export.

New / Used Car Export

We export new and used cars from the UK every week, sourced from our dealer, auction and trade network or supplied by you, given a multi-point inspection before shipment and shipped worldwide by RoRo or container.

Pre-Purchase Inspections

Before you commit to a car, we check its DVLA, MOT and recall records and run a paid UK history check, then view it, compare it with its logbook and send you photos and a video. A full mechanical inspection by an independent inspector can be added, quoted separately.

Government Pre-Shipping Inspection

Where the destination country requires a pre-export roadworthiness inspection, we arrange it with the approved inspection agency before the sailing so the vehicle is not held up on arrival. Quoted separately from the shipping price.

UK Vehicle Collection & Delivery

We collect any vehicle from any UK address and deliver it to the departure port at £1 per mile, driven on DVLA plates or moved on a carrier, timed to meet the booked sailing.

Secure Vehicle Storage

Vehicles wait with us in a secure compound between purchase and sailing, so there is no rush to move a car the day you buy it and nothing accumulating in storage charges at the port. Quoted separately from the shipping price.

Paintwork Reconditioning

Where a car would arrive the better for it, we can recondition the paintwork before it ships — worth doing while the vehicle is with us rather than paying to sort it out after it lands. Quoted separately from the shipping price.

UK Vehicle Customs Clearance

We make export declarations directly on the UK customs system and prepare every document needed at the UK port of exit, including the Bill of Lading, export certificate and DVLA export documentation.

Tax-Free Vehicle Supply and UK VAT

UK Preferential Origin (Reduced Import Duty)

Some UK-built vehicles may qualify for reduced or zero import duty. That depends on the UK having a trade agreement with the destination country and on the car meeting that agreement's rules of origin. During your quote, we'll confirm whether the vehicle you're interested in qualifies.

VAT-free Supply of VAT-Qualifying (VATQ) Cars

A new car, or a used car that carries VAT on its full price, can be sold free of UK VAT when it is exported and HMRC's conditions are met. Used cars of that kind are known in the trade as VAT-qualifying: typically ex-rental or ex-lease cars, where the hire or leasing company reclaimed the VAT when it bought them. On a VAT-inclusive price, the VAT is one-sixth. We buy the car from the dealer, sell it to you zero-rated, export it to Oman and keep the proof of export. A used car sold under the second-hand margin scheme is different: VAT is due only on the dealer's margin, so there is no VAT to take off it for export.

HMRC's Personal Export Scheme (PES)

The Personal Export Scheme lets overseas visitors and UK residents who are leaving the UK, and will stay outside it with the car for at least six months, buy a car free of VAT and use it here before it is exported. Only a business that operates the scheme can sell under it, and we do not, so you buy from a dealer that runs it. The car must leave within 12 months of delivery for an overseas visitor who lives outside the EU, or 6 months for a UK or EU resident, or the VAT becomes payable. It can suit anyone relocating to Oman: we find a dealer that runs the scheme and ship the car when you are ready. How the scheme works.

Oman Car Shipping FAQs

Common questions about shipping a vehicle from the UK to Oman.

How much does it cost to ship a car from the UK to Oman?

RoRo shipping starts from around £1,096 per vehicle, and a 20ft container from about £1,516. Those are indicative rates from our published rate table and move with the market, so call us for the latest. A full export quote also covers the UK-side work: customs clearance, port handling, DVLA paperwork and export documentation.

How long does shipping from the UK to Oman take?

Current carrier schedules show 5-6 weeks port to port, sailing from Southampton. Transit varies with the routing and how many ports the vessel calls at on the way. The live sailing schedule on this page shows the actual dates for each upcoming sailing.

Which UK ports do sailings to Oman depart from?

Southampton, with Höegh Autoliners. We collect vehicles from any UK address and deliver them to the departure port.

Which ports can my car be shipped to in Oman?

Sohar and Salalah. Which one your vehicle sails to depends on the service and the date, and we confirm it when the booking is made.

How old can a car be to be imported into Oman?

Oman Customs admits private vehicles under seven years old, trucks and buses under ten, and equipment under fifteen. Classic vehicles of 30 or 50 years are allowed in as well, in every case with the approval of the General Traffic Department. Whatever its age, an imported vehicle must meet the standard specifications in force in Oman, a personal importer must be at least 18, and the ban on right-hand drive still applies, so a classic bought in the UK has to be a left-hand-drive one. Import duty and registration fees are paid by the importer.

Can a UK car be converted to left-hand drive for Oman?

No. The WTO's 2021 review of Oman lists vehicles converted from right-hand to left-hand drive among Oman's prohibited imports, next to right-hand-drive vehicles themselves, with the commerce ministry as the responsible body. Royal Oman Police Decision 26/94 lets a right-hand-drive vehicle in only for re-export or for spare parts, and forbids driving it in the Sultanate. The practical answer is a car built with left-hand drive, which we can find in the UK or elsewhere in Europe.
