Shipping to Mexico
Our Mexican sailings discharge at Altamira, Veracruz, Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas. Veracruz and Altamira face the Gulf of Mexico; Lázaro Cárdenas and Manzanillo are on the Pacific coast. All four are run by state port administrations, the ASIPONAs (Administración del Sistema Portuario Nacional). Veracruz's administration reported 993,603 vehicles across its quays in 2023, when it called the port Mexico's first for car traffic. The current schedule has RoRo sailings with "K" Line, Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Höegh Autoliners and container sailings with MSC.
Built in North America, or thirty years old
Mexico lets a used car in for good only on the terms of its used-vehicle import decree, which runs to 30 November 2026. ANAM, the customs agency, puts it simply: the definitive import of a used vehicle is regulated by the Secretaría de Economía and needs its prior permit. The permit is waived for a car eight or nine model years old whose VIN shows it was built or assembled in Mexico, the United States or Canada, and for residents of the northern border zone; the permit procedures that exist are for cases such as vehicles adapted for people with disabilities, donations and cars for dismantling. The decree also bars any vehicle whose use is restricted in the country it comes from, one that fails Mexico's mechanical or environmental conditions, and one reported stolen. A British-built used car under thirty years old therefore has no route to Mexican plates. A classic does: a car whose model year is 30 or more years before the current one is exempt from the permit, up to 8,864 kg. Tell us the model and budget and we will find it in the UK or Europe.
Tell us what you are looking forWhat does work for a British car is the temporary route. A foreign tourist, or a Mexican legally resident abroad, can bring a foreign-registered vehicle in under a Banjército temporary import permit: 180 days in the country, multiple entries over twelve months, a guarantee deposit set by the vehicle's year and a return certificate when the car leaves. Traffic keeps to the right, so most buyers ask for a left-hand-drive car, which we can source in the UK or elsewhere in Europe.
Here we source the car, arrange tax-free supply from the selling dealer where it qualifies, collect it, complete UK export clearance and the DVLA paperwork, and see it loaded. Sailings leave from Southampton, Liverpool, Felixstowe and London Gateway. If the car was registered in the UK, the full V5C log book travels with it, less the permanent export section that goes to DVLA. At the Mexican end we can arrange clearance, registration and delivery to your door through a local agent, quoted separately, or work with an agent of your choice.
Documentation Required for Booking
- Car Registration Document (V5 or Logbook) and Vehicle Invoice (or value).
- ID (one government-issued photo ID and one utility bill showing address).
Payment Terms / Modes
- A £1,000 deposit secures a vehicle we source or buy for you. It is part of the price, not an extra fee. If you cancel, our terms and conditions say what is refunded.
- The balance is due in full, in cleared funds, before the vehicle is loaded, unless your quotation sets out different terms.
- Bank transfer preferred. Card payments up to £5,000, with no fee on personal debit or credit cards.
- Letters of credit, cheques, money orders and cash are not accepted.
Our Other Services
UK Car Sourcing & Supply
We source any new or used vehicle from any manufacturer in the UK, through our network of franchised dealers, car auctions, classified listings and private sellers, then inspect, purchase and export it to your country.
Buy a Car in the UK on Your Behalf
We check, view and buy the UK car you've found, from a dealer or a private seller, then ship it to you, protecting you from the pitfalls of paying an unknown seller from overseas.
Tax-Free & VAT-Free Vehicle Supply
We find new and VAT-qualifying used cars from VAT-registered dealers who will sell them free of UK VAT for export, which takes a sixth off a VAT-inclusive price. The saving comes from the dealer, not as a refund from us: we are not VAT registered. We arrange the export and give the dealer the proof it needs.
New / Used Car Export
We export new and used cars from the UK every week, sourced from our dealer, auction and trade network or supplied by you, given a multi-point inspection before shipment and shipped worldwide by RoRo or container.
Pre-Purchase Inspections
Before you commit to a car, we check its DVLA, MOT and recall records and run a paid UK history check, then view it, compare it with its logbook and send you photos and a video. A full mechanical inspection by an independent inspector can be added, quoted separately.
Government Pre-Shipping Inspection
Where the destination country requires a pre-export roadworthiness inspection, we arrange it with the approved inspection agency before the sailing so the vehicle is not held up on arrival. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Collection & Delivery
We collect any vehicle from any UK address and deliver it to the departure port at £1 per mile, driven on DVLA plates or moved on a carrier, timed to meet the booked sailing.
Secure Vehicle Storage
Vehicles wait with us in a secure compound between purchase and sailing, so there is no rush to move a car the day you buy it and nothing accumulating in storage charges at the port. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
Paintwork Reconditioning
Where a car would arrive the better for it, we can recondition the paintwork before it ships — worth doing while the vehicle is with us rather than paying to sort it out after it lands. Quoted separately from the shipping price.
UK Vehicle Customs Clearance
We make export declarations directly on the UK customs system and prepare every document needed at the UK port of exit, including the Bill of Lading, export certificate and DVLA export documentation.

Tax-Free Vehicle Supply and UK VAT
UK Preferential Origin (Reduced Import Duty)
Some UK-built vehicles may qualify for reduced or zero import duty. That depends on the UK having a trade agreement with the destination country and on the car meeting that agreement's rules of origin. During your quote, we'll confirm whether the vehicle you're interested in qualifies.
VAT-free Supply of VAT-Qualifying (VATQ) Cars
A VAT-registered dealer can sell a new car, or a used car that carries VAT on its full price, free of UK VAT when it is exported and HMRC's conditions are met. Used cars of that kind are known in the trade as VAT-qualifying: typically ex-rental or ex-lease cars, where the hire or leasing company reclaimed the VAT when it bought them. On a VAT-inclusive price, the VAT is one-sixth. A used car sold under the second-hand margin scheme is different: VAT is due only on the dealer's margin, and HMRC does not let a dealer zero-rate it as an ordinary export. We are not VAT registered, so the saving comes off the dealer's price, not as a refund from us. We arrange the export to Mexico and give the dealer the proof of export it needs.
HMRC's Personal Export Scheme (PES)
The Personal Export Scheme lets overseas visitors and UK residents who are leaving the UK, and will stay outside it with the car for at least six months, buy a car free of VAT and use it here before it is exported. Only VAT-registered businesses can operate the scheme, so you buy from a dealer that runs it. The car must leave within 12 months of delivery for an overseas visitor, or 6 months for a UK resident, or the VAT becomes payable. It can suit anyone relocating to Mexico: we find a dealer that runs the scheme and ship the car when you are ready. How the scheme works.

Mexico Car Shipping FAQs
Common questions about shipping a vehicle from the UK to Mexico.
How much does it cost to ship a car from the UK to Mexico?
RoRo shipping starts from around £1,191 per vehicle, and a 20ft container from about £1,719. Those are indicative rates from our published rate table and move with the market, so call us for the latest. A full export quote also covers the UK-side work: customs clearance, port handling, DVLA paperwork and export documentation.
How long does shipping from the UK to Mexico take?
Current carrier schedules show 3-8 weeks port to port, sailing from Southampton, Liverpool, Felixstowe and London Gateway. Transit varies with the routing and how many ports the vessel calls at on the way. The live sailing schedule on this page shows the actual dates for each upcoming sailing.
Which UK ports do sailings to Mexico depart from?
Southampton, Liverpool, Felixstowe and London Gateway, with "K" Line, MSC, Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Höegh Autoliners. We collect vehicles from any UK address and deliver them to the departure port.
Which ports can my car be shipped to in Mexico?
Altamira, Veracruz, Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas. Which one your vehicle sails to depends on the service and the date, and we confirm it when the booking is made.
Can I import a used car from the UK into Mexico?
Not in the ordinary way. ANAM, Mexico's customs agency, says the definitive import of a used vehicle is regulated by the Secretaría de Economía and needs its prior permit. The current decree, in force until 30 November 2026, waives the permit only for a car eight or nine model years old whose VIN shows it was built or assembled in Mexico, the United States or Canada, and for residents of the northern border zone, so a British-built car does not qualify. The permit procedures that exist cover cases such as vehicles adapted for people with disabilities, donations and cars bought for dismantling. The one open door is a classic: a car whose model year is 30 or more years before the current one, up to 8,864 kg gross weight, is exempt from the permit and is cleared on a definitive import pedimento through a customs broker.
Can I take my UK-registered car to Mexico for a few months?
There is a temporary route. Banjército, the bank that issues Mexico's temporary vehicle import permits, offers one to foreign tourists and to Mexicans legally resident abroad who enter Mexico in a foreign vehicle, and it allows 180 days in the country with multiple entries and exits over twelve months. You apply online, at the border or at a Mexican consulate that runs a Banjército module, prove you own the car, and leave a guarantee deposit that depends on the vehicle's year; it is returned when the car leaves and you obtain the return certificate. Check with Banjército how the permit is handled for a car arriving by sea rather than by road before we book. We can ship the car to a Mexican port and arrange its collection there through a local agent, quoted separately, or work with an agent of your choice.
