About Port of Chittagong
Bangladesh's principal seaport, run by the Chittagong Port Authority, and the busiest container port on the Bay of Bengal. It handled a record 3.41 million TEU in calendar 2025, up 4.1% from about 3.28 million TEU in 2024, along with about 138 million tonnes of cargo and 4,273 ship calls. Car carriers discharge at the port's general cargo jetties, for example jetties 7 and 8 in 2023, and imported vehicles are held in the port's car sheds until delivery, which have at times filled up and kept car carriers waiting at anchor in busy periods. About 24,150 cars were imported through the port in 2023, down from 61,467 in 2019, as importers moved much of the reconditioned car trade to Mongla. Containerised cars go through the container terminals: New Mooring, Chittagong Container Terminal and the Patenga Container Terminal, which began operating in June 2024.
