Built in 1974 to replace the old port of Cayenne, Dégrad des Cannes is French Guiana's main commercial port and handles more than 90% of the territory's seaborne trade. It is run by the Grand Port Maritime de Guyane, which also manages the Pariacabo site at Kourou. Traffic passed one million tonnes for the first time in 2024 (1,015,303 tonnes, 75,193 TEU, 236 merchant ship calls), then eased to 963,228 tonnes and 74,655 TEU in 2025.

Two 51 tonne electric rail-mounted quay cranes were inaugurated on 27 November 2025; before that ships relied on their own gear. Roll-on roll-off cargo, including construction machinery, buses, trucks and cars, came to 12,903 tonnes in 2024, and the tidal access channel limits draft to about 7 m.
